Ear Wax Removal

“Tao er” or 掏耳 literally means “digging ears” and this form of ear wax removal and cleaning can be traced to Chengdu, China, where the traditional street ear cleaners practice their trade since days of ancient China. Customers who are a mix of locals and tourists have their ears cleaned by the ear cleaners in Chengdu who are wearing a headlamp to illuminate the ear canal by the streets.

Here, the ear wax cleaning is done in the comfort of the room where this can be combined with a traditional tui na massage session, a far cry from the busy and bustling streets of Chengdu.

The traditional ear wax cleaning combines the calming and ear tingling sensation when our therapists massage and clean the customers ears and the ear canals of ear wax. Other people call this sensation autonomous sensory meridian response or ASMR where the body is relaxed by the brushing, tapping or hand movements on the ear during the ear cleaning process. In layman terms, this is the hair standing and tingling sensation.

Some people claim that this helps them to calm down, feel relaxed and helps them to cope with anxiety and migraines, helping them to sleep better at night. There may be those who may remember here in our neighborhoods where the barbers had this electric light bulb stand being switched on when customers requested their barbers to clean their ears after a haircut. Some of the customers even fall asleep on the barber’s chair!

The comfort and nice sensations that derived from this session is probably best explained by the stimulation of the acupuncture points of the ears when the ear wax removal and cleaning is being done. The hand tools that we used are one time use or thoroughly cleaned using disinfectants before we use them on customers. Some items are disposable and discarded after use and this is to ensure hygiene and cleanliness of our service.
